About Queen of the Murchison Guest House & Cafe

Queen of the Murchison Guest House & Cafe is a gracious historic retreat in Cue, Western Australia, offering warm country hospitality in the heart of the Murchison goldfields. Perfectly positioned as a halfway stop between Perth and Karijini, Newman or Port Hedland, this welcoming guest house invites travellers to slow down, recharge and discover a true outback desert town.

Built in the 1930s as the Capitol Hotel, the impressive two-storey brick and iron building blends old-world character with modern comforts, featuring wide jarrah staircases, high ceilings and generous verandas that overlook quiet Austin Street. Today, it operates as a family-run bed and breakfast, providing comfortable hotel-style rooms for singles, couples, families and workers, with continental breakfast included in the tariff. Guests enjoy air-conditioning in summer, cosy log fires in winter and a relaxed, homely atmosphere year-round.

Evenings at Queen of the Murchison are all about good food and genuine connection, with excellent home-cooked meals served in a friendly, BYO dining room that celebrates old-fashioned service and conversation. After dinner, many guests wander onto the wide first-floor veranda to share a quiet drink, watch the sunset colours over the desert and chat with fellow travellers and host Joyce.

Secure off-street parking, a small garden area and thoughtful eco-friendly upgrades throughout the property add extra comfort and peace of mind. From here, it is easy to explore Cue’s rich gold mining heritage, Indigenous culture and striking historic buildings, or venture further to see nearby Mount Augustus, the world’s largest rock. With its blend of history, hospitality and authentic outback character, Queen of the Murchison is an inviting base for your next desert road trip through Western Australia’s Murchison region.
